Under new legislation proposed in the House of Representatives last week, Congress could force the FCC to quickly approve a standard for plug-and-play cable-ready television sets, establish minimum receiver quality, and require full-power broadcast-transmission levels for DTV stations.
The “Consumer Access to Digital Television Enhancement Act of 2003” bill was introduced by Reps. Lee Terry (R-Neb.) and Rick Boucher (D-Va.).
Boucher said the legislation is designed to break the logjam now delaying the DTV transition. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced that it supports the bill.
CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro commended the bill's focus on requiring broadcasters to provide full power DTV broadcasts “so that consumers relying on over-the-air DTV reception will have an effective and reliable signal.”
