Crawford selects MassChannel for cable origination

Masstech Group of Richmond Hill, Ontario, has announced that Crawford Communications in Atlanta, Ga., has installed a three-channel configuration of its MassChannel product for use in a new low-cost cable network origination service. Designed as a "channel in a box" system, the manufacturer said MassChannel is a complete playout and sequencing solution that allows a cable network to be up and running quickly.

Crawford said it purchased the system after extensive testing. Now installed for regular use, the company said a single operator runs it from a single control room.

MassChannel is a combination of hardware and software that facilitates playback of MPEG-2 content from local, networked or DVD storage media, allowing a large number of networked channels to share common storage and archive resources. The system installed at Crawford Communications includes ingest stations, DVD robotic archive storage, and 40 hours of on-air disk storage at eight Mbps encoding.
