Kline Towers to upgrade Sutro Tower for earthquake protection

Sutro Tower has awarded Kline Towers and Simpson Gumpertz &
Heger Consulting Engineers a contract to perform a seismic upgrade to
the Sutro Tower on Twin Peaks in San Francisco.
Kline Towers will be responsible for all design, detail fabrication
and erection in conjunction with the consulting engineer firm. Work is
scheduled to begin in September and will entail reinforcing structural
leg splice members and leg framing.
The Sutro Tower is regarded by many in the industry as one of the
premier broadcast structures in the world. Home to 11 DTV, 10 NTSC and
four FM stations and numerous other communications antennas, the
1,000-foot self-supporting tower was originally designed and erected by
Kline Towers between 1972 and 1974. At the base of the tower, the
structure's legs are separated by 150 feet and at top the distance
between the antennas is 100 feet.
The seismic upgrade is designed to protect the Sutro Tower from
earthquakes in excess of 8.0 on the Richter scale which is regarded as
the maximal credible magnitude of a seismic event in the Bay Area.
