Panasonic's VariCam HD camera captured the opening images of Super Bowl XXXVIII.
To capture images for the opening segments of the Super Bowl broadcast last night, cinematographer Scott Duncan used two Panasonic AJ-HDC27 VariCam HD cameras to shoot footage for the pre-game show, teasers leading up to the game, and for the game’s opening segments (including the introductions of the starting line-ups). The footage was acquired in the 720p HD format, and then converted to 1080i for the CBS SD and HD telecasts.
Duncan, president of Scott Duncan Films, and fellow cinematographer David Finch, used VariCams outfitted with Panasonic's BT-LH900 8.4-inch HD monitors. The two shot head-shot images of all Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots players and coaches. The players and coaches were shot on green screen and this footage was used in the video roll-ins of the starting line-ups as well as during the game.
In July, CBS Sports hired Duncan to create a new look for its “The NFL Today” pre-game show. He worked with the network throughout the NFL season, and at the end of the season, was contracted to create powerful, inspiring imagery for the Super Bowl.
