Thales Broadcast & Multimedia has introduced a new platform that allows broadcasters to offer Internet access and services over any satellite or terrestrial TV Network in either ATSC or DVB-T environments.
Components of the new Thales IP video system include OpenStream, which manages the distribution of IP multicast and unicast content; OPAL, which encapsulates IP data into DTV signals; IP receivers; and the Affinity UHF low-power digital TV transmitter, which is optimized for network management.
Thales’ platform provides high-speed Internet connections in isolated areas where ADSL technology is not implemented, or where the deployment of an ADSL network would be costly and unprofitable.
OpenStream allows users to access Web content using the bandwidth of a digital TV network. User requests are sent at modem speed through the telephone network, but the Internet data is conveyed via a high-speed terrestrial connection. This asynchronous link allows any end-user to receive the information requested with minimal latency.
