Imagine the improvement in editing efficiency, video clip archiving and metadata creation if there were a way for a computer to analyze video content automatically and extract information that could be used to better manage the deluge of data in which newsrooms find themselves afloat.
Well, it might not happen anytime soon, but if researchers participating in the Advanced Research and Development Activity community are successful in their Video Analysis and Content Extraction (VACE) program and their work is made available in a commercial form, things could get a whole lot easier for television news directors, editors and journalists.
Aimed initially at the intelligence gathering community, the VACE program is a two-year applied research project bringing together the talents of teams from Virage, ALPHATECH, the University of Maryland and MIT with the goal of developing video content extraction technology.
The first task of VACE program participants is creating auto detect and recognition technologies from a broad range of video sources, including indoor and outdoor activities, unmanned aerial vehicles and television news reports.
Eventually, technologies to come from the VACE program will improve indexing, retrieval, understanding, image processing, data mining, filtering and selection and storage and forwarding mechanisms.
