FCC approves temporary DTV channel return in Buffalo

The FCC has approved a request from WPXJ-TV to give up its digital channel in Buffalo, NY. The station will be allowed to broadcast only in analog until the DTV transition ends. Then it will flash-cut to digital transmission on its NTSC channel 51.

The station, licensed to Paxson Batavia License, and an affiliate of PAXtv, will surrender its out-of-core paired digital allotment on Channel 53 and then flash-cut to digital transmission on its NTSC channel at an unspecified future date.

The FCC allows flash-cuts to stations that are not affiliates of the top four networks. The policy, the FCC said in its approval letter, is in the public interest because it results in rapid band clearing of digital spectrum.
