All-Mobile Video and Grass Valley present Grammys in HD

Mobile truck company All-Mobile Video sent its 52ft Resolution HD truck and a B-unit to the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the live telecast of the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, Sunday, Feb. 13 on CBS. The broadcast, marking the 32nd consecutive year the Grammys have aired on CBS, appeared live at 8 p.m. ET and was tape delayed in the West.
On board the all-digital truck, the production staff utilized a crew of about seven people; a Sony MVS-800 multi-format production switcher; more than 12 Sony HDC 900 and 950 HDCAM cameras; an Oxford digital audio console; a Grass Valley Profile XP Media Platform; and EVS servers.
Inside the Staples Center, images were displayed on large video projection and small and LCD screens. A variety of interstitial elements for the telecast was fed by nine Grass Valley Profile PDR and XP Media Platform video servers from Thomson.
ProQue, an AV production company based in Los Angeles, owns and operated the six Grass Valley PDR 300 SD Profiles and three PVS 2000 Profile HD servers on site, connected via a fiber channel network in order to move clips on and off the Profiles quickly. The PVS 200 HD Profiles, configured with two internal HD MPEG I-Frame or Long GOP encoders and up to four playout channels, were used for the playback of all pre-taped segments, lower-third graphics, commercials and billboard packages appearing on screen during the HD telecast. The PDR 300s supported 24 monitors within the Staples Center for those in attendance.
The ProQue team operated the Profiles with approximately seven hours of attached storage per server, providing enough space to utilize both pre-built effects as well as to create live effects from separate elements during the live show.
