SBE is co-sponsoring a half-day seminar February 21 on digital electronic newsgathering with the ATSC. The seminar takes place in conjunction with the 11th Annual Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) Technology Retreat in Palm Springs, CA.

The seminar will feature experts involved in the development of digital ENG technology and related standards. Presentations will cover topics including the technical aspects of the data return link (DRL) system, digital ENG implementation considerations, frequency coordination, spectrum issues and HDTV from the field.

Here's a look at what's scheduled for the seminar:

Tuesday, 21 February 2006
Time Event Presenter
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration Open
1:00 p.m. Welcome and Overview of ATSC Activities Jerry Whitaker, ATSC
This presentation will set the stage for the program with introductory remarks and an overview of current ATSC projects.
1:15 p.m. Frequency Coordination and Related SBE Activities Chriss Scherer, SBE
One of the cornerstones of the SBE is frequency coordination, which is essential to ENG work. This presentation will review frequency coordination efforts and other current SBE activities.
1:30 p.m. Progress Report on DRL Development. Dane Ericksen, Hammett and Edison
The data return link (DRL) system promises to dramatically change the digital ENG landscape by controlling interference and providing for signal identification. This presentation reviews the status of work now underway within ATSC to develop the necessary specifications for DRL design and use.
2:00 p.m. DRL System Implementation Considerations Merrill Weiss, MWG
DRL functionality provides an opportunity to rethink the way stations relay video from the field to the station. This paper focuses on implementation considerations and outlines possible application extensions for the DRL system.
2:30 p.m. Next Generation Video Codecs: An Overview and Comparison Matthew Goldman, Tandberg Television
A lot has changed since MPEG-2 was first developed. This presentation provides an overview of next-generation video codecs and compares their performance as compared with MPEG-2.
3:00 p.m. Advanced Codecs and What they Mean to D-ENG Pat Waddell, Harmonic
When it comes to moving video content from one place to another, it’s all about bandwidth. New advanced video codecs promise to permit improved image quality with fewer bits. This paper reviews what is practical today, what is on the horizon, and how it impacts ENG.
3:30 p.m. Coffee Break
3:45 p.m. HDTV Over ENG--The Path Forward John Wood, MRC
The next big leap in ENG is HDTV from the field. This paper outlines the technical challenges and the technologies available to meet those challenges.
4:15 p.m. RF Transmission of Uncompressed High-Definition Signals Kurt Loheit, Boeing
Identifying and solving challenges presented by line-of-sight transmission of uncompressed HD signals utilizing high data rate, high frequency technologies.
4:45 p.m. A Next Generation Satellite Transmission Standard Mark Dale, Efficient Channel Coding
DVB-S2 is a recently adopted satellite communications standard that offers improved bandwidth and power efficiencies relative to the old DVB-S workhorse. Performance comparisons and key technical aspects of the standard and will be reviewed. Next generation broadcast and interactive applications for this standard will also be discussed.
5:15 p.m. ENG Spectrum Issues--What’s on the Horizon Dane Ericksen, Hammett and Edison
ENG from the field has faced spectrum allocation challenges in the past, and will likely face more challenges going forward. This presentation reviews the issues that may lie ahead for broadcasters.
