The IBC has announced its 2007 Innovation Award winners. The IBC Innovation Awards celebrate excellence in the creation of complete technical and operational solutions. The organization received more than 70 entries, which were judged by of a panel of international editors chaired by Michael Lumley.

The winners were:

  • In the content creation category, CNN’s digital newsgathering project.
  • In the content management category, RTL-TVi in Belgium for its instant tapeless production system.
  • In the delivery category, UK news broadcaster ITN for NeMeSys — a new media system that the broadcaster created in-house.

The panel also awarded the Judges’ prize, which covers technology applications that combine content creation, management and delivery in a unique way, delivering benefits for users. The winner of the 2007 Judges’ prize was CNN for its July 2006 coverage of the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict. During its coverage of the event, CNN journalists filed hundreds of live reports, using portable IP transmission gear from remote locations close to the conflict. The result brought viewers close to the story as it unfolded. The use of small, lightweight, IP-based Internet connections and conventional satellite uplinks allowed the journalists to provide sophisticated “on the scene” reports. CNN’s newsgathering tool works over any existing IP infrastructure, giving journalists immediate live and video FTP submission, real-time content monitoring, editing and voice communication.
