Irdeto buys content security assets of Cloakware

Content security technology provider Irdeto has acquired 100 percent of Cloakware, a privately held software company for $72.5 million in cash.
Irdeto’s security solutions reside on hardware platforms like smart card chips, as well as on a range of software-only solutions for IPTV, mobile TV and mobile digital rights management (DRM). Cloakware’s technology, which makes security inseparable from the software it protects, adds an additional layer of protection to Irdeto’s security offering.
The two companies have worked together through a partnership formed in 2003. Irdeto said the acquisition of Cloakware supports its ongoing strategy to deliver end-to-end security offerings and a broad portfolio of security solutions covering multiple markets and a wide range of devices. The acquisition broadens Irdeto’s reach across the entire content lifecycle and into new markets. With Cloakware now a part of the Irdeto group of companies, it will add enterprise, government and consumer electronics solutions to the company’s product offerings.
Cloakware’s software solutions — including the Cloakware Security Suite, Cloakware Robustness Solutions and Cloakware Service Password Manager — protect more than 1 billion applications and the assets of some of the world’s largest companies, such as Texas Instruments, Pioneer Electronics and Vodafon.
Cloakware’s previous shareholders included significant venture capital funds and industry experts Fairhaven Capital, Globespan Capital Partners and Intel Capital.
