JVC Professional Products has introduced the GY-DV5000U professional DV camcorder. The camcorder features a modular architecture, improved highlight handling and enhanced low-light sensitivity.
Also making a debut is JVC’s new BR-DV3000U VTR, a model that supports all sizes of DV and DVCAM tapes without an adapter and records and plays back both NTSC and PAL video standards.
Using three half-inch CCDs with micro-lenses and spatial offset, the new GY-DV5000U camcorder offers more than 800 lines of horizontal resolution, 12-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion, 24-bit digital signal processing (DSP) and refined user controls.
JVC said the 12-bit A/D conversion circuitry provides enhanced dynamic range between bright and dark scenes. As a result, the camera can process 400 percent of the normal video signal and provide color and details normally lost on cameras. The GY-DV5000U’s low light performance is increased, with sensitivity of F:13 at 2000 lux. The camera will produce 100 percent video at 0.4 lux.
The tape transport was redesigned to accommodate both full-size and MiniDV cassettes. The GY-DV5000U will record up to 276 minutes using JVC's new DV-276PQ cassettes, compared to 63 minutes offered by the previous model.
The GY-DV5000U is modular, allowing it to adapt to new technology. Using small, modular components that attach to a digital port between the camcorder and the battery pack, the GY-DV5000U uses the optional KA-DV5000 module for real-time MPEG-4 recording and clip logging. It can also be used for direct web streaming.

The new BR-DV3000U VTR offers IEEE-1394 (“Firewire”) compatibility, an RS-422A interface and optional RM-G30U wired remote. The longer recording capability and higher quality of the large DV cassettes allows the BR-DV3000U to archive several digital masters on one tape for economical storage. Using JVC’s LA-DV276PRO cassettes, more than 4.5 hours of recording time may be obtained.
The new recorder’s dual-tension, multi-motor system provides precise cueing and reliable tape handling. Variable speed playback is included with a noiseless slow motion range of -1/3 to + 1/3 normal. Search speeds range up to 100 times normal. Unlike high-end consumer VTRs, the BR-DV3000U features 48kH audio that is locked with the video. LED level indicators are provided on the front panel.
