Almost one year after the collapse of its original HDTV transmitting tower near Hemingford, Neb., KDUH-TV's new 1,475-foot tower is nearing completion.
Scheduled for a mid-September launch, the tower is about 500 feet shorter than its predecessor. It will give the station more room to proceed with its digital roll out plans.
On Sept. 24, 2002, the station's 1,965-foot tower, which was being strengthened, collapsed, killing two workers and injuring three others. It was the tallest structure in Nebraska and taller than the Empire State Building in New York City and the Sears Tower in Chicago.
Duhamel Broadcasting of Rapids City, Ia., owns the station and is suing Structural Systems Technology, claiming that the McLean, Va., -based company was negligent in the techniques it used to strengthen the tower.
