Kerry re-introduces white space legislation

Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) has re-introduced legislation to make broadband available to unconnected communities by exploiting unused frequencies in the broadcast spectrum known as white spaces.

Kerry introduced the same bill in the Republican-controlled 109th Congress, but the full Senate did not act. With Democrats now in power of both bodies of Congress, the legislation — called the Wireless Innovation Act of 2007 — has a better chance of passage.

The law would require the FCC to permit license-free use of the unassigned broadcast spectrum between 54MHz and 698MHz within 180 days of enactment.
