KLAS broadcasts local HD news in Las Vegas

Oct 2, 2006 8:00 AM

KLAS, a CBS affiliate, has become the first TV station in the Las Vegas market to broadcast its news and weather in HD. It becomes the 11th station in the United States to make the transition. The HD conversion was said to cost KLAS more than $1 million in equipment upgrades.

Nielsen Media Research lists Las Vegas as the second largest market in the nation in terms of owning HDTVs, plasma screen televisions, DVRs or ordering video-on-demand. KLAS estimated there were some 200,000 HDTV sets in its viewing area.

The station was also the first in its market to broadcast CBS programs in HD, starting in August 2000.
