Media Bureau grants ATSC request for CALM reply comment extension

The Media Bureau released an order July 18 extending the deadline for reply comments on proposed rules to implement the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act. The new due date for reply comments is Aug. 1, the order said.
The bureau granted the latest extension after the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) asked July 15 for the due date to be extended. The ATSC made the request based on its plans to formally approve a successor document to the ATSC A/85 RP and publish it on its website July 26.
The CALM Act directs the FCC to incorporate the ATSC A/85 recommended practice and make it mandatory "insofar as such recommended practice concerns the transmission of commercial advertisements by a television broadcast station, cable operator, or other multichannel video programming distributor."
In making its request for an extension, the ATSC said more time would let it, its member companies and other parties provide "a more complete factual and legal record in this proceeding."
