Almost 1 million China Mobile subscribers tuned in to CCTV broadcasts of the 2008 Beijing Games on the carrier's new 3G network
On May 8 at 9 a.m., mountaineer Zhaxi Ciren, standing on Mount Everest at 8844m, sent pictures of the Olympic torch to 20 million China Mobile subscribers. China Mobile went on to put the Beijing Games in the hands of millions through its “Palm Olympics” platform via the telecom's recently completed TD-SCDMA network, the company reported last month.
The most watched mobile broadcast was the opening ceremony for the Beijing Games, watched by more than 500,000 users. At its peak, 240,000 people were logged on at the same time. Even now, although the Beijing Games are over, China Mobile continues to offer subscribers a historic archive of 3800 hours of recorded videos.
