MySpace deploys new copyright protection technology

MySpace announced last week that it has begun implementing new technology to thwart the use of copyright protected video content on its video sharing Web site.
Called Take Down Stay Down, the new system is based on Audible Magic technology. MySpace said this would ensure that video content that has been pulled from MySpace member profiles at the request of copyright holders couldn’t be re-posted.
MySpace said there’s no extra cost for copyright owners to deploy Take Down Stay Down. If the MySpace user receives a takedown notice regarding a hosted video clip, the new software will take a digital fingerprint of the video and add it to a copyright filter that blocks the content from being uploaded again.
Google, parent company of YouTube, announced at its shareholder quarterly meeting last week that it would be testing a set of tools called Claim Your Content, which would similarly automate the takedown process of copy protected content.
