NBC has purchased 11 Avid DS Nitris systems from Avid Technology to replace linear and non-linear post-production suites at both its internal graphics department, known as DesignWorks, and at MSNBC. The network is using the real-time 10-bit HD Avid post-production solution to create various graphics applications for its news and entertainment programs.
The new purchase agreement is an extension of a larger multimillion-dollar deal announced last year to replace several of its tape-based news production systems with Avid’s end-to-end digital newsroom environment.
Part of the Avid DNA family, the Avid DS Nitris system offers a hybrid architecture designed to maximize the capabilities of both host-based software processing and hardware-based acceleration. This enables it to deliver real-time effects of up to two streams of 10-bit HD media and eight streams of 10-bit uncompressed SD media. The system also supports a wider range of high-quality formats - from compressed SD to 2K - than any other non-linear editing system on the market and offers the industry's broadest range of professional I/O connections.
