National Geographic series uses Panasonic VariCam

The National Geographic Channel’s series "Science of the Bible," which uses modern technology and research to explore a wide range of biblical accounts, was shot on location in the Middle East last spring with Panasonic’s AJ-HDC27 VariCam HD cinema camera.
After a seven-week shoot in Turkey, shooting recreations for nine episodes, series’ Director of Photographer Kris Denton purchased a VariCam for subsequent work on another National Geographic series, "Hunter and Hunted," as well as various commercial spots.
Two VariCams, rented from Birns & Sawyer in Hollywood, CA, were deployed at the shoot, which was based in Bodrum, Turkey. The production was shot predominantly at 30p because of the requirement to integrate a significant amount of graphics in post.
The editing process required downconverting material to SD using Panasonic’s AJ-HD1200A DVCPRO HD VTR, cutting at 20:1 resolution on an Avid NLE, color correcting on a DaVinci, and on-lining on an Avid Adrenaline system. The show is mastered to Panasonic D-5 HD for delivery to National Geographic.
