North American IPTV equipment market drops sharply, says report

The North American IPTV and switched digital video equipment market declined sharply in the second quarter of 2008, pulling the worldwide market down 5 percent to $1.27 billion despite healthy increases in EMEA, Asia Pacific and CALA, reports Infonetics Research.

A new report from the market research firm, “IPTV and Switched Digital Video Equipment, Services and Subscribers,” finds the dip is due to slowing IPTV and SDV subscriber additions by service providers in regions hit hard by the economy, particularly in North America.

Among the findings in the report:

• North America’s share of the overall IPTV and SDV equipment markets dropped from 47 percent to 38 percent between the first and second quarter this year.
• The number of IPTV subscribers is forecast to hit 72 million worldwide by 2011.
• In the second quarter, the worldwide IP set-top box market was down 10 percent due to the subscriber slowdown, while the IP video encoder market was up 8 percent as subscribers seek more channels, particularly HD channels.
• Motorola continued to lead the worldwide IP set-top box market in the second quarter, although Cisco was closing in. In Asia Pacific, Dasan and Samsung were neck-and-neck for the lead.
