Sony Corp. has reached a technology partnership agreement with Avid Technology that enables images acquired with Sony’s XCDAM professional optical disc camera to be compatible with Avid’s NewsCutter and Media Composer nonlinear editing systems.
Through the agreement, an editor working with Avid’s NewsCutter system will be able to easily use files stored as A/V data and metadata. Avid’s support for XDCAM will allow users to transfer high-resolution A/V clips across IP networks at high speeds and begin assembling edit decision lists immediately.
This file exchange is also possible due to both Avid’s and Sony’s support of the Material eXchange Format (MXF) media file format.
Sony said it will ship 1,000 units of the XDCAM (cameras and disc players) worldwide by March and that it will show this interoperability with Avid’s products at NAB.
The XCDAM system uses 12 cm blue-laser optical media that can store up to 23 GB per disc.
