The Weather Channel is using Inmarsat’s Broadband Global Access Network (BGAN) to support its storm-chasing activities for its recently launched HDTV channel.
The Weather Channel HD, which shoots its outdoor reports with Panasonic AJ-HPX2000 P2 cameras, relies on BGAN to transmit footage of blizzards and hurricanes from the heart of storms.
"Our field crews are also in constant contact with our meteorologists, who are helping them determine the best and safest vantage point for capturing severe weather, like blizzards and hurricanes,” said The Weather Channel VP of production Nathan Smith.
If the winds become “excessive,” in the words of Smith, The Weather Channel relays its field coverage via satellite services like Inmarsat BGAN.
