WTIC-TV on-air with Harris UHF transmitter

The Tribune-owned FOX affiliate went on-air with PowerCD in the first quarter of 2005.

WTIC-TV, a Tribune-owned FOX affiliate serving the Hartford-New Haven region (DMA #27), went on-air with a Harris PowerCD UHF ATSC transmitter in the first quarter of 2005.

Paul Brenner, WTIC-TV’s director of engineering, said his goal was to integrate solid-state transmission technology to significantly reduce operational expenses. He said the station’s monthly expenses were initially reduced by more than $12,000 with a new transmission system that included a Harris Platinum solid-state ATSC transmitter for its digital channel. He expects that the IOT associated with the PowerCD system, with its water-cooled design, will bring the station an additional 10 to 15 percent increase in power efficiency.

WTIC also is utilizing PowerCD’s IT-oriented infrastructure, which features an internal Harris Linux-based eCDi transmitter network monitoring and control system. A secure system with password-protected access levels, eCDi provides full monitoring and control of all transmitter elements, including power amplifier status, output monitoring, cooling system monitoring and control, control system diagnostics, RF system mode control, and RTAC control and monitoring.
