The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) will present Zaxcom President Glenn Sanders and chief engineer Howard Stark with a 2008 Primetime Emmy Engineering Award at a ceremony on Aug. 23 at the Renaissance Hotel in Los Angeles. The award recognizes Zaxcom's accomplishments in designing the Deva on-location audio recorder/mixer.
According to the NATAS, the Primetime Emmy Engineering Awards recognize developments in engineering that are either so extensive an improvement on existing methods or so innovative in nature that they materially affect the transmission, recording or reception of television.
First introduced in 1996, the Deva hard disk recorder/mixer helped revolutionize the process of location sound recording for television and has set the standard for how audio is recorded in the nonlinear age, with the Deva being the used on a “who’s who” of high-end TV productions. Zaxcom's development and refinement of the Deva included many features that have become standard operating procedure in location recording, including the "one-file-per-take" recording system, use of BWF, incorporation of metadata, the invention of the now-common concept of prerecord, and the establishment of DVD-RAM as the standard delivery media for TV sound.
