A long-awaited first industry standard for digital signage has been released by the Digital Signage Standards Committee at the Point-Of-Purchase Advertising International (POPAI), the not-for-profit industry association for marketing at retail. The committee’s non-technical standard terminology document defines 10 key industry terms – and their synonyms, when appropriate. The standards document also provides a Digital Signage Reference System – a diagram depicting a typical configuration and content flow of a multi-site digital signage network. The signage process, as represented, begins in a network operations center, where content is authored and scheduled for a distribution server. Content can be distributed to the local point-of-presence via satellite, Internet, or virtual private network (VPN). Playout can occur via a single or multichannel player and drive one or multiple displays. Members of the digital signage standards committee include Matt Nelson of Avocent, Jeff Porter of Scala, William Wu of DS-IQ, and Dustin Speer of Vestcom, along with Joe Finizio, POPAI’s vice president of member services. The standards soon will be posted on many signage providers’ Web sites. The POPAI group is also seeking industry feedback on these initial standards. For more information, visit www.popai.com. UAE mall leverages signage network as premium advertising platformOct 26, 2005 2:56 PM, Digital Signage Update e-newsletter Lamcy Plaza, a large mall in the United Arab Emirates, has installed a fully integrated digital signage network. The LamcyTV network was first installed as point-of-purchase signage for mall tenants to help attract mall shoppers to their stores. To date however, Lamcy Plaza has already sold airtime to industry brands that benefit from the large premium market the mall attracts. To gain maximum ROI from the network, Lamcy Plaza Management advertises its brands and displays mall services on the network. In addition, advertising is sold to large premium brands that are sold in the mall. Because of the advertising interest by premium brands and tenant stores, Lamcy Plaza Management anticipates the investment for the installation will be recouped in less than one year. At that point, the mall’s management plans to engage a professional research firm to measure the effectiveness and sales uplift experienced by LamcyTV. The mall network consists of 37 plasma and LCD screens distributed in strategic locations where shoppers congregate, such as elevators and escalator landings. The network is a joint project between Lamcy Plaza Management and Specialized Software Services (SSS), a provider and marketer of digital signage networks. The system employs 25 Scala InfoChannel players that drive 12, 17in LCD screens with built-in computers and 25, 42in Samsung plasma screens. The network is managed by Scala's InfoChannel Enterprise Edition Network Manager and controlled over a WiFi network. The system’s content design and authoring tool allows Specialized Software Services to develop focused and compelling content. The system enables frequent and timely content updates that result in faster response to market conditions, audience focus or promotional requirements. Content is rendered on the fly at each point-of-playback. Content can be changed in real-time with local POS systems. For more information, visit www.scala.com. A large-screen LED display is an integral part of a newly unveiled outdoor exhibit in downtown Kansas City, MO. Created by contemporary artist Michael Rees, the sculpture and display are part of the permanent collection of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Rees uses 10mm, three-in-one surface-mount Daktronics LEDs positioned directly behind his sculpture to show dramatic animation of Putto 2x2x4, his 18ft figurative work of art. The exhibit is a part of Kemper Museum's efforts to place five works of contemporary sculptures in the downtown Kansas City area. DST Systems provided funds for the project. The 6ft x 9ft video display shows Rees's creature in motion with a one minute, 48-second animation loop that he created with 3-D modeling software. The display operates with the Daktronics Venus 7000 control system and shows images in 4.4 trillion colors.
