Seoul Broadcasting tops survey of worldwide DAM sites

Sep 29, 2005 10:46 AM, IBC Update e-newsletter

A recent independent study from Kane Consulting into best practices in digital broadcasting named Korea's Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) as the global leader in broadcast industry best practices.

Of the 353 digital asset management sites worldwide surveyed, SBS and five other broadcasters stood out as leaders. SBS was rated at 80 percent on Kane's index of best practices in areas such as production speed, editorial quality, cost reduction, productivity gain and generation of incremental revenue.

Other broadcasters included RTL Cologne, RTL/TVI Brussels, SVT Stockholm, France 2 Paris and New York 1. Each scored more than 50 percent on Kane's index, with an average of 62 percent.

Kane's study spanned the broadcast lifecycle of ingest and catalog, production, distribution, storage and security. Common best practice attributes include the use of standards-based digital asset management technology to digitize broadcast content and streamline production workflows.

IBM's Digital Media Center solution, along with other integrated technologies from KONAN TECHNOLOGY, Thomson Grass Valley, CIS Technology and D2NET, enabled SBS to produce and store news digitally with the broadcast of the Athens Olympics in 2004.

Sep 29, 2005 11:13 AM, IBC Update e-newsletter

The IABM Award for Innovation

MEDIORNET's X-Switch optical networking system won the IABM Award for Innovation.

The International Association of Broadcasting Manufacturers presented the award during a reception at IBC2005 in Amsterdam on Sept. 10. MEDIORNET chief executive officer Gernot Pammer accepted the award from IABM Chairman David MacGregor.

The MEDIORNET X-Switch enables broadcasters to interface, route and transport large payloads of digital information quickly and securely. A scaleable modular system, X-Switch can be deployed for point-to-point links in an outside broadcast, for a multi-site local network or as the basis of a large-scale network linking production and playout sites throughout the world.

Central to X-Switch is the ability to transport HD-SDI video, SD-SDI video, telephone, machine-control data and general metadata simultaneously over a single high-capacity fiber-optic cable. The entire processing and delivery system is transparent, handling up to 2GB/s of information in any required combination of signal formats.

Cypress introduces physical layer port protection switch

Sep 29, 2005 12:40 PM, IBC Update e-newsletter

Cypress Semiconductor has introduced the YLink port protection switch, a broadcast video link protection switch that provides redundancy throughout an entire video network.

The YLink switch offers users an easy way to guarantee signal integrity and uninterrupted service for live broadcast video systems, instantly switching a video signal to an alternate link when a preset error condition exists.

Before the introduction of the YLink solution, the only way to provide redundancy was to implement multiple line cards or complete systems, each of which can cost thousands of dollars while leading to long switch-over times causing visible disruption of video.

The YLink is designed for use with Cypress’s HOTLink-On-Demand family of video SerDes to offer dual link protection for point-to-point SMPTE SDI communication links (both HD-SDI and SD-SDI).
