CBS Digital Media and CBS News have announced plans to transform CBSNews.com, a 24-hour, multi-platform digital news network, into a broadband Internet service.

At a press conference Tuesday, CBS News President Andrew Heyward said the network is “redefining the mission of CBS News” to address the around-the-clock demands of a “digital universe.”

To do that, CBS News will move from a primarily television and radio news-based operation to a 24-hour, on-demand news service, available across many platforms.

The new CBSNews.com will include:

  • An on-demand, 24-hour digital broadband news network;
  • A blog, called the "Public Eye," designed to provide greater openness and transparency into the newsgathering process;
  • A newly configured homepage, including The EyeBox, a one-page video player showcasing free broadband video from CBSNews.com;
  • A commitment by CBS News fully to integrate its personnel and other global newsgathering resources to provide exclusive, original reporting and commentary around the clock.

CBS’s investment in CBS News and CBSNews.com is part of a “cable bypass strategy” that will let viewers get breaking news, original reporting, commentary and analysis over a broadband Internet connection.

According to the network, the number of homes connected to broadband Internet service will surpass cable and satellite households by 2010. Over that period, technology will improve to the point where watching video over the Internet will offer “a viewing experience equal to television.”
