NY1 News streamlines workflow with integrated news production platform

NY1 News, the flagship news channel of Time Warner Cable's Local News Division, has implemented Dalet Enterprise Edition for integrated news gathering, production asset management and distribution.

Known for its local news coverage in New York, NY1 News is available to more than 3 million cable subscribers 24 hours a day on Time Warner Cable throughout New York City's five boroughs, as well as most of upstate New York and in parts of New Jersey.

The installation provides NY1 News a single-vendor software solution that blends newsroom system functions with playout automation capabilities, establishing a file-based production and broadcast infrastructure that enables NY1 to manage content production and localized news delivery.

According to Joe Truncale, NY1 VP of operations and engineering, the news organization worked closely with Dalet to develop many production and assignment desk features to maximize newsgathering and distribution efficiencies. NY1 also benefited from working with a single software vendor solution, eliminating the need to “piece together applications” to meet its needs, he said.

The unified Dalet platform provides NY1 News contextual tools for logging and searching materials, editing packages, managing rundowns and facilitating content distribution across multiple channels and platforms; including NY1 News, NY1 Noticias, NY1.com and New York 1 on Demand.

Technical complexities associated with conversions, migration and metadata management are automated by Dalet's underlying MAM framework and workflow engine. The workflow provides continuity for NY1 News' collaborative news production format in which reporters shoot, edit and write their stories. It also enhances their playout and content distribution capabilities by providing an integrated pathway for sharing content with sister Time Warner Cable stations and other broadcast outlets.

To manage the 24-hour news schedule, NY1 News follows a news wheel format. The standard wheel begins with a NY1 Minute, followed by a brief weather forecast and news reports. Coverage is localized for five regions and supplemented throughout the day with live news, sports and public affairs programs.

The Dalet Enterprise Edition installation integrates and manages multiple Omneon ingest and playout servers, an Omneon MediaGrid shared production storage and several Chyron CG applications. Dalet also integrates Apple Final Cut Pro editing workgroups and a VCI traffic system for a contiguous system and subsystem workflow.
