Scripps moves forward with BAS project; WPTV to receive equipment

As part of its BAS relocation, WPTV News Channel 5 will receive 15 new transmitters, eight receivers and a new control system.
WPTV News Channel 5, the Scripps Television Station Group NBC affiliate in West Palm Beach, FL, will use new digital 2GHz hardware from Nucomm as part of the ongoing, industrywide 2GHz Broadcast Auxiliary Service (BAS) relocation project.
The station, one of 10 belonging to Scripps, will receive 15 new transmitters, eight receivers and a new control system. The other nine Scripps stations also have selected Nucomm to provide 2GHz ENG equipment for their BAS relocation activities.
Through the past seven years, WPTV has worked with Nucomm to implement several technological innovations, including dual path equipment. As part of the BAS process, Nucomm is updating equipment valued at more than $1 million.
Even though the 10 Scripps Television Station Group networks are geographically dispersed and do not typically share equipment, Scripps VP Michael Doback says having all stations linked with the same provider uncovers new benefits, such as allowing personnel to move from station to station when an emergency occurs without having to adjust to new equipment.
The Scripps Television Station Group stations are in the process of receiving their new equipment, which is expected to be installed and updated during the next 60 to 90 days.
