WCSC-TV adds Kaleido-X multiviewer monitoring to support HD newscast

WCSC-TV has launched South Carolina’s first local HD newscast using the Kaleido-X multi-image display system for monitoring.
WCSC-TV in Charleston, SC, kicked off the area’s first local HD newscast at the end of September using the Miranda Technologies Kaleido-X multi-image display system for monitoring.
WCSC broadcasts from a newly refurbished control room in Charleston, following an HD upgrade of its newsroom, facility infrastructure, visual asset ingest and management, archiving and asset-sharing systems.
The Kaleido-X system currently displays 48 inputs over eight 40in LCD screens located in the station’s main control room, the producer cockpit and the audio booth.
According to WCSC chief engineer Mike Gurthie, the station customized its display walls using Miranda’s XEdit software. The configuration software allowed WCSC to arrange the display so its control room operators, producers and technical directors can view what’s most important to each.
Kaleido-X also has made it easier to run multinews operations from two studios, Gurthie said. With a single button push, the display layout in multiple areas can be changed from the station’s primary CBS news to its local FOX affiliate’s news programming.
The Kaleido-X system interfaces to a Snell & Wilcox Kahuna production switcher, which provides tally updates and source labels in the monitoring display. The station plans to expand its Kaleido-X system to allow monitoring on a fourth multi-image display in the newsroom, which will act as a backdrop for shots of newscasters in front of the camera.
