CBS News relied on Avid Technology’s new HD editing and storage solutions for coverage of the recent Democratic and Republican conventions.

CBS News deployed Avid NewsCutter Nitris systems connected to Avid VideoRAID storage systems on-site for quick turnaround of content and to play to air HD news segments. CBS worked with the Avid DNxHD 145 codec, which enabled the production team to work with mastering-quality HD material in real time.

The combination of NewsCutter, VideoRAID and the Avid DNxHD codec created a production workflow that was both effective and familiar to CBS News personnel, said  Frank Governale, VP of CBS News operations. Additionally, because “CBS Evening News with Katie Couric’’ has begun broadcasting in HD using the Avid DNxHD 145 codec, editing remotely at the conventions with the codec allowed the network to maintain an integrated format, he added.

The abilties of NewsCutter Nitris DX also gave CBS the flexibility to work with and combine SD as well as HD shot in multiple resoltuions coming from the five-network pool, said Mel Olinsky, director of bureau operation at CBS News.
