ESPN STAR turns to TSL for multi-phase system upgrade

ESPN STAR Sports, a sports broadcaster based in Singapore, has selected manufacturer and systems integrator Television Systems (TSL) to rebuild and upgrade the Asian sports network’s transmission area.
The project is being done in three phases. The first took place two years ago when ESPN STAR Sports replaced its previous automation system with an Encoda system to handle complex live events. A SeaChange BMC 1653 server was also installed at that point, which is now being upgraded to a 65005 five-node system with 146GB disks.
The second phase, which is in progress, consists of a complete rebuild and upgrade of the sports network’s transmission area. ESPN STAR has had six large manual transmission suites. That area is being converted to provide nine suites with space for an additional four. There will also be a multichannel position where all channels running under the automation system can be monitored.
Phase three, which is on the drawing board, will see the transition from tape in the rest of the facility to an entirely server-based production system.
