Magnus named vice president, GM of new ESPNU
Burke Magnus has been named to the newly created position of vice president and general manager of ESPNU, the parent network’s new college sports venture.
In his role, Magnus will oversee all programming, production and operations for ESPNU.
The multimedia college sports initiative is scheduled to launch in March 2005. It will include a new 24-hour television network and supply content and components for many ESPN businesses.
FSN Southwest reaches agreement for Astros, Rockets local TV rights
FSN Southwest has reached a multi-year agreement with the Houston Regional Sports Network to sub-license local TV rights to all Houston Astros and Houston Rockets games not selected for national telecast.
The agreement calls for both parties to explore other programming opportunities revolving around the teams. Further terms were not disclosed.
SMPTE honors NFL Films pair with gold medal
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers recently bestowed the John Grierson Gold Medal award to Ed and Steve Sabol of NFL Films.
They were honored for their use of slow motion, zoom lenses, 16mm film and camera technology to document the National Football League.

FSN South renews rights pact with Memphis Grizzlies
FSN South and the Memphis Grizzlies have renewed their agreement granting FSN exclusive cable and satellite rights to the NBA franchise.
The pact allows FSN to telecast 60 regular season Grizzlies games, pre- and post-game shows and a weekly Grizzlies highlight program. Last season, FSN aired 25 games.
Tello to fill FSN Pittsburgh general manager slot
Steve Tello has been named vice president and general manager of FSN Pittsburgh after spending six years with FSN’s Los Angeles news operations.
In his new position, Tello will oversee all aspects of the regional sports business and work with the other FOX entities involved with FSN.
CollegeSports.com produces live coverage of UCLA, Monterrey Tech hoops
CSTV’s CollegeSports.com last night produced live coverage of the men’s basketball exhibition matchup between UCLA and Monterrey Tech for Webcast distribution via UCLABruins.com.
The webcast was the only live coverage of the game.
FSN New York wins 20-year rights extension with MSG Networks, NJ Devils
MSG Networks and the New Jersey Devils signed a 20-year rights agreement to ensure that the team’s games will be seen on FSN New York through the 2023-2024 season.
The financial terms of the agreement were not announced.
