KRIV-TV puts 1MW dual polarization weather radar to work

KRIV-TV, the Fox Television Stations group owned-and-operated station in Houston, has become the first station in the country to begin using Baron Services' Guardian, a dual polarization radar with hydrometeor identification.

The latest generation of radar technology from Baron Services, dual polarization radar differs from standard radar by using both a vertical and horizontal radar pulse. The dual pulses make precipitation detection much easier and more precise. With hydrometeor identification, the dual polarization radar can tell meteorologists how much and what type of precipitation is falling with greater precision.

In 2004, Baron Services worked with WHNT in Huntsville, AL, to convert a WSR-74C radar system into a 350C dual polarization radar. This radar became the first broadcast dual polarization radar in the country. Baron Services advanced this technology with Guardian, which is a 1 million watt C-band system.

KRIV has also upgraded its weather display software to Baron's VIPIR HD and FasTrac HD.
