Minute Maid Park goes Wi-Fi

A Wi-Fi network has been successfully installed at Minute Maid Park, the home of the Houston Astros.

The wireless network gives Astro fans a new way to enhance their experience by accessing game statistics over the Wi-Fi network from their handheld computing devices. Time Warner offers pitching and batting statistics via its Road Runner Speed Zone for $3.95 for four hours.

Media assigned to covering the games also benefit from the Wi-Fi installation. The wireless network gives them a new avenue through which to file video clips, images and stories.

The network required more than 90 Cisco Aironet 1200 Series IEEE 802.11b/g Access Points (APs) offering connection speeds of up to 54Mb/s, and the CiscoWorks Wireless LAN Solution Engine (WLSE) for management of the Wi-Fi infrastructure. For the 100 Wi-Fi Hotspots, Cisco Catalyst Series platforms provided switching capability, while the Cisco Series of Access Routers connected the Cisco Aironet APs to the network.
