The newly opened Newseum in Washington, D.C., is using Front Porch Digital’s DIVArchive solution to manage digital content generated by its broadcast operation.

The Newseum, which opened April 11 in a new 250,000sq-ft facility located adjacent to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall, not only offers exhibit galleries but also incorporates five edit suites and two production studios used for broadcasts including ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

Front Porch's DIVArchive hardware and software knits together a unified system to manage and move media throughout their entire lifecycle, from ingest and production to long-term preservation.

The Newseum integration is unusual for DIVArchive. Instead of a traditional MAM application, the Newseum relies on Artesia asset management, which was designed with management of hard assets, such as museum artifacts, in mind. DIVArchive's open architecture enabled integration with Artesia, which is also directing Thomson Grass Valley K2 servers, NexSan STATboy nearline storage and a Sun SL500 digital tape library.

Newseum producers and editors are finding DIVArchive's partial-restore function, which enables retrieval of only the broadcast-quality segment desired rather than an entire program, to be particularly useful, because it enhances efficiency by saving time and bandwidth.
