NY1, New York City's 24/7 news station, will use an Omneon Spectrum media server as an end-to-end field production solution for its coverage of the upcoming U.S. political conventions.

The Spectrum server employed provides NY1 with a single storage platform for ingest, editing and final transfer of finished material back to its New York headquarters. Material to be shot in DV25 SD 4:1:1 will be ingested to the Spectrum server as file transfers from NY1's Panasonic P2 cameras and made immediately available to six Apple Final Cut Pro workstations using ProRes 422.

The edit-in-place capability provided by the Omneon Spectrum will allow the workstations to share and edit material residing on the system without transferring or copying files. Completed stories saved on the Spectrum server will be formatted as MOV files and then sent as baseband video via fiber to NY1's Manhattan facility for final transmission and webcasting.

NY1 anticipates that simultaneous access to content stored on the Spectrum system will result in a 50 percent improvement in workflow efficiency compared with the station's experience at past conventions. That improvement will translate into more timely updates and more thorough coverage for viewers.
