RAI workers strike delaying Alpine ski championships

A strike Tuesday by Italian television production workers held up the men’s giant slalom at the Alpine skiing world championships in Bormio, Italy.

The work action was expected to be finished by Wednesday, allowing the event to proceed. However, the European Broadcasting Union, which is working with Italian broadcaster RAI to cover the event, reportedly put contingency plans into place if the strike were to continue. When the championships resume, T-Systems’ will use asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) to transmit the races at ARD, ZDF and Swiss Broadcasting.

This is the first time all data will be transported digitally for the event. Data will be sent to the International Broadcasting Center (IBC) in Bormio from cameras positioned on the downhill slopes via optical fiber, and from there to the broadcast studios via ATM. The setup provides broadcasters with sharp pictures and high sound quality.
