The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has launched the SMPTE Professional Development Academy (SMPTE PDA), a resource for continuing education on key technologies.

The inaugural event, SMPTE PDA Now, is a live, interactive webcast Jan. 17, 2008, from 1-2 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Savings Time), called “IPTV – What Does it Really Mean and How Does it Work?” This session will discuss the end-to-end architectural components in an IPTV chain, from the source to IP-based STBs, in the home. It will cover the services that can be provided by IPTV, the role of IPTV middleware in enabling them and how IPTV can provide a platform for integration of video, voice and data.

SMPTE PDA’s guest speaker for this event is Greg Thompson, chief video architect, Video & Content Networking Business Unit, Cisco.
