Tokyo Broadcasting System plans DVB-S2, H.264 HD SNG

Japanese broadcasting network Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) has selected the NTT Electronics HVE9100 AVC/H.264 encoder and HVD9100 decoder to support its move to HD satellite newsgathering (SNG).

In March 2008, TBS decided to use a system that combines DVB-S2 and AVC/H.264 for HD SNG. The operation of the system will commence in December. TBS also is planning to complete a conversion of SNG systems at all of its affiliates to HD by September 2009. The NTT Electronics encoder and decoder will be used at all 28 affiliate stations.

The ability to have a minimal delay time of 200ms and retain the ability to use its MPEG-2 codecs were critical factors in TBS’s decision to select the NTT Electronics equipment, said Yutaka Shibata, technology development director for the TBS Technology Division's Broadcasting System Center.

The HVE9100 AVC/H.264 encoder and HVD9100 decoder support 1080p, 1080i and 720p HD and 480i and 576i SD as well as a maximum of two audio systems, for a total of eight-channel encoding and decoding. The encoder and decoder also supports the MPEG-2 format.
