WAVE launches first HD local newscast in Louisville, KY

WAVE-TV, the Raycom Media NBC affiliate in Louisville, KY, has become one of the first stations in the market to launch an HD newscast. Raycom standardized on the Snell & Wilcox production switcher and IQ modular infrastructure for its groupwide transition to HDTV operations.

According to the station operations manager, Daniel Foos, WAVE had 30 days to roll out its new HD Newscast, so having a switcher that could handle both SD and HD signals was important. The Kahuna switcher made possible to go live with HD without having to convert archive footage from its archive, he said.

The Kahuna also offered the station personnel a wide range of creative options, which made it possible for WAVE's directors to think outside the box, “doing things that simply weren’t possible before, such as animated effect on transitions,” Foos said.
