In the world of TV, 2009 will be remembered as the year full-power broadcasters put aside analog transmission and fully entered the digital age. Future generations may also recall it for substantial progress on the mobile TV front with the adoption of the ATSC A/153 mobile DTV standard and the launch of about 30 mobile DTV channels nationwide.
These developments all build on the work done at the Advanced Television Test Center (ATTC) laboratory established in 1992 to evaluate new TV broadcast systems and submit recommendations to the FCC.
Peter Fannon, who today is VP of corporate and government affairs for Panasonic for North America, was the president of the ATTC during those early days of evaluation and development. Twice selected to receive the Best Industry DTV Leadership Award from the Consumer Electronics Association’s Academy of Digital Television Pioneers, Fannon is well-equipped to discuss the relevance of completing the DTV transition, the importance of HD over-the–air transmission, mobile DTV and the unfolding debate in Washington, D.C., over the future of broadcast spectrum.
Fannon discusses these issues and others in this podcast interview.
