The transition away from videotape to a more IT-oriented workflow for the acquisition and post production of TV and motion picture content has created the chance to make things simpler when it comes to synchronization and time labeling.
Not only are the approaches employed today complex and expensive, but they fail to leverage the existing IT capabilities, such as networking technology, built into much of today’s equipment.
That may all change if the industry accepts the proposals of a joint task force put together by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE).
The task force is putting together a comprehensive report that will be presented to two special SMPTE standards committees in September for their consideration as they create new synchronization and time labeling standards. It also will be made available online just prior to the opening of IBC2009 in Amsterdam and will be available for purchase at the convention.
The task force is led jointly by Hans Hoffmann of the EBU technical department and Peter Symes, SMPTE director of standards and engineering. In this podcast, Symes addresses synchronization and time labeling and recommendations that will be presented in the report.
