At NAB, Link Research announced low bit-rate upgrades to its L1000 decoder, extending the standard minimum bit rate of 2.5 Mb/s down to 500 kb/s. Until now the L1000 was only suited to high bit-rate contribution feeds, but now new applications are possible where transmission bandwidth is limited.

The Link 1000 is a powerful system in a tiny, low-power package. Being able to switch between COFDM and QPSK makes the device highly versatile, often saving the cost of a backup encoder in a mobile system. The Link L1000 design incorporates a custom encoder/modulator PCB, designed by CJM2.
Link's encoders can be supplied in a small chassis which is half the size of a standard 19" equipment rack. Link's encoders are generally used in ENG trucks and sports applications. This compact version is perfect for OB trucks that are going to be fully loaded with equipment. Two units may be supplied in a 1 U format.
The L1000 encoders use less than 20 watts of power. It creates less heat helping to keep the environment cool inside the truck, even in the busiest conditions.
The new low bit-rate option includes lower selectable resolutions to maximise picture performance. It is designed to give excellent picture quality right down to 500kb/s. End-to-end signal delay is as low as 40mS, without loss of picture quality.
