Samsung debuts multistandard, multiband mobile TV chipset

Samsung’s latest mobile TV chip works across multiple standards and frequency bands.

Samsung Electronics has begun sampling a new mobile TV chipset comprising a 65nm multistandard channel decoder (S3C4F31) and multiband RF tuner (S5M8602). It supports the DVB-H/T, DAB-IP, ISDB-T and T-DMB standards.

The channel decoder works by transforming the analog signal into a digital one to restore the image and audio source. According to Samsung, it features a high-signal reception rate as a “core characteristic,” enabling uninterrupted reception even on high-speed trains. The RF tuner, which receives the analog broadcast signal, has a simplified circuit structure by applying a low IF to compliment the conventional zero IF. It is also a general-purpose tuner, supporting UHF, VHF and L-band frequencies. The chipset supports link layer processing to output fully error-corrected IP datagrams or MPEG-2 transport streams.

The chipset is being offered either as two standalone ICs or as a system-in-chip package, which places the RF tuner and the channel chip on a single module package. Mass production of the chipset is slated for the fourth quarter of this year.
