2010 World Cup biggest booster of Africa’s mobile TV infrastructure investment

FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, predicts a record TV audience for the 2010 World Cup, and for the first time will offer live coverage specially produced for mobile phones.

More than 10 mobile TV broadcasting networks will be opened in Africa in time for the soccer world championships next year, according to a senior official at Nokia Siemens Networks, distinguishing World Cup coverage as the biggest driver of infrastructure rollout since the Olympic Games. The World Cup, one of the world's most closely followed sports events, will be held in South Africa in June and July of 2010.
Stefan Schneiders, the head of business development for mobile TV at Nokia Siemens, said he expects many African countries to shortly follow Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Namibia in launching DVB-H mobile TV broadcasts.

And for the first time, FIFA will also be offering live coverage specially produced for mobile phones.
