Google is bullish on mobile TV

In this hour-long conversation with Charlie Rose, Google CEO Eric Schmidt addressed mobile TV and the role of Android in enabling "personal TV."
Describing the challenge, Schmidt invited the audience to “imagine the power of these mobile devices over a five- or 10-year period. They must make it possible to do almost everything that we do today with other means. . . It should be possible to watch television and watch your show routinely on these devices, in very high quality. The technology is just getting there. And when that occurs, it’s a different experience because it’s a personal experience. When I turn on the television, it shows the same shows that I saw yesterday, and I watch them and it doesn’t know that I watched them yesterday. What a foolish television. Why is it not smarter?"

Google’s answer, according to Schmidt, is Android-powered devices evolving into televisions. "We’re building the platform that will allow the content people to do more targeted content. So you can imagine the mobile device will say, ‘Well, Eric, you watched this episode of this show. We’ll offer you this other one.’ Or, ‘Didn’t you forget that you already watched that episode of ‘Charlie Rose’? You should watch this other one because it’s related to the one you liked.’ This personal viewing experience is a fundamental thing that the Internet can do, and companies like Google can do," Schmidt said.
Caveat: This point came up in a discussion of Kindle, an Internet tablet distinct from current mobile smartphones.
