Latin American audiences will be able to watch World Cup soccer for free via Telegent mobile TV chip-equipped handsets

While in the United States and Canada hope springs eternal that someday we'll be able to click a TV button on a mobile handset and watch the local news, in Latin America, they're already doing it.

América Móvil and Telefónica subsidiaries Telcel (Mexico), Claro Argentina, COMCEL Colombia and Movistar (Mexico and Peru) are offering customers TV phones equipped with Telegent's mobile TV receiver — at no extra cost and in time for the FIFA World Cup. The Telegent chip enables mobile handsets to receive terrestrial broadcast TV, including analog signals.

“A significant market exists for consumers who want the familiar TV content and broadcast delivery available on free-to-air TV handsets,” said IMS Research analyst Anna Maxbauer. “IMS estimates market demand for analog TV handsets at more than 150 million units in 2013.”
