TANDBERG Televsion has supplied an MPEG-4 AVC HD encoding system to Spanish-based broadcast solutions provider Overon for the delivery of National Geographic Channel HD to broadcasters and TV service providers across Europe. The TANDBERG EN8090 MPEG-4 encoder has enabled the use of a bandwidth-efficient satellite distribution service to increase National Geographic’s presence on networks throughout Europe.

National Geographic Channel HD is distributed worldwide by Fox International Channels, part of News Corporation.  The channel showcases a wide variety of programs, including wildlife, science, technology, culture and natural phenomena.

In addition to the bandwidth-saving capabilities, one of the major advantages of selecting the EN8090 was the versatility of its audio inputs with advanced multichannel audio encoding support according to Ramon Caro, technical director at Overon.

The EN8090 MPEG-4 AVC HD encoder uses TANDBERG’s Intelligent Compression Engine technology, featuring Clarus video preprocessing, with enhanced noise reduction, artifact removal and improved filtering. It enables high-quality images to be sent at extremely low bit rates. New image-enhancing techniques such as single-slice video processing architecture, multipass analysis and forward-looking encoding also improve efficiencies and reduce bandwidth usage.

Combined with TANDBERG’s Reflex statistical multiplexing, the EN8090 can achieve significant efficiency improvements over previous generations of MPEG-4 AVC HD technologies.
